Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that costs are going up, albeit gradually. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
